Yuliush Slovatskyy

Yuliush Slovatskyy (1809–1849) — an outstanding Polish poet and playwright of the Romantic era, a native of the Ukrainian Volyn region, one of the three great national poets of Poland (the "three bards").

Overview

Yuliush Slovatskyy was born in 1809 in Kremenets, in Volyn, into the family of a professor at the Kremenets Lyceum. He studied at Vilnius University and later worked in Warsaw. During the Polish November Uprising of 1830, he left for London as part of an insurgent delegation. After the defeat of the uprising, he found himself in forced exile in Europe, where he lived for almost twenty years until his premature death from tuberculosis at the age of not quite forty.

Although Slovatskyy wrote in Polish and belonged to Polish literature, he remained closely tied to his native Volyn and Ukraine. His body of work includes 16 poems and a number of outstanding dramas ("Krak", "Mindovh", "Mazepa", "Benyovsky", and others).
