Treaty of Buchach of 1672

The Treaty of Buchach of 1672 — an international agreement between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire, signed on October 18, 1672, in the town of Buchach (Galicia). The agreement once again confirmed the state independence of the Zaporozhian Host headed by Hetman Petro Doroshenko under the protectorate of the Sultan, as well as defined the ecclesiastical subordination of Cossack lands to the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Overview

As a result of the joint military campaign of the troops of Sultan Mehmed IV, Hetman Petro Doroshenko, and Crimean Khan Selim I Giray against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (the capture of Kamianets-Podilskyi and siege of Lviv), Poland was forced to sign a peace treaty in Buchach.

According to the terms of the treaty: 1. Podolia passed under direct authority of the Ottoman Empire (forming the Podolia Eyalet / Kamianets Eyalet). 2. Bratslav region and Southern Kyiv region (Right-Bank Ukraine) were recognized as an independent Cossack state under the protectorate of the Ottoman Empire led by Hetman Petro Doroshenko. 3. According to Romanian and ecclesiastical sources, Orthodox territories and parishes of Right-Bank Ukraine under Ottoman protectorate (specifically future Khan Ukraine and Oleshky Sich) were subordinated to the jurisdiction of the Metropolis of Brăila (Proilavia) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
