Rotoscoping in Animation¶
Rotoscopic animation (also known as "rotomation") is a technology for creating animated films in which animation frames are traced over pre-recorded live-action footage featuring real actors and sets. Director Ralph Bakshi became a pioneer and key popularizer of this method in feature-length fantasy and sci-fi cinema.
Overview¶
The rotoscoping technique was invented in the early 20th century (patented by Max Fleischer in 1915); however, for a long time it was used in a limited capacity for specific complex movements. A large-scale technological and artistic revolution in the use of rotoscoping occurred in the 1970s–1980s, when Ralph Bakshi made "rotomation" the foundation for creating his feature films.
Thanks to rotoscoping, directors managed to combine realistic body language and dramatic acting of film actors with the limitless graphic possibilities of animation.
