Oil and gas industry and geological exploration in Crimea (1945–1954) refers to a complex of scientific, exploratory, drilling, and economic work on the exploration of oil and natural gas deposits on the Kerch and Tarkhankut Peninsulas during the first post-war decade, closely integrated with the fuel and energy strategy of the Ukrainian SSR.

Overview

In the post-war period, Crimea Oblast experienced a severe deficit of hydrocarbon raw materials. Industrial enterprises, railways, and public utilities on the peninsula were completely dependent on imported coal from Donbas and fuel oil from Baku and the Volga region. In order to create its own fuel base, large-scale geological exploration work was launched between 1945 and 1954 on the Kerch Peninsula, Tarkhankut, and in the North Crimean Trough.

According to the study by P. V. Satskyi, the execution of these works was directly linked to the scientific and industrial resources of the Ukrainian SSR. The Ukrvybukhprom trust, the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and the Ukrhaz and Ukrkrymhazrozvidka trusts carried out seismic exploration, deep drilling, and the development of gasification projects for Simferopol, Kerch, and Sevastopol.
