Ecological balance and water deficit of Crimea — complex ecological-geological and hydrological problem of the Crimean Peninsula caused by limited internal freshwater resources, specifics of the geological structure of the limestone basement, and aggravated by the closure of the North Crimean Canal following the russian occupation of 2014.
Overview¶
Geologically, the Crimean Peninsula is divided into three main zones: Mountainous and Foothill Crimea, Eastern Crimea (Kerch Peninsula), and Northern Plain Crimea. The northern steppe portion lies on limestone strata — former bed of an ancient sea. The limestone stratum is an unstable geological platform; extracting mineral resources or intensive pumping of groundwater from it combined with seismic activity carries risks of forming voids, faults, landslides, and soil salinization.
Under international standards, the critical minimum water availability is 1,000 m³ per person per year. For Crimea's population of 2.5 million, annual demand is 2.5 billion m³ of water. Prior to 2014, the North Crimean Canal supplied about 75% of this water, rivers provided 15%, and underground wells — the remaining 10%. Discontinuation of Dnieper water supply from Kakhovka Reservoir confronted occupational authorities with an unprecedented water crisis, while attempts at exhausting exploitation of underground water intakes led to the onset of an ecological catastrophe in steppe regions.

Subsoil development (gas and oil extraction or mass abstraction of groundwater) in a seismically active region threatens the formation of underground caverns, landslide processes, and faulting of strata.

- Soil salinization and saltwater intrusion: Groundwater in coastal zones is interconnected with the sea and saline bays of Syvash. Intensive pumping of fresh water induces intrusion of salt water into aquifers, resulting in soil salinization and formation of salt pans (specifically, in Nyzhnohirskyi District in 2016 the onset of an ecological disaster was recorded).
- Irrational use and losses in the canal: The occupational administration resorted to discharging drinking groundwater from wells into the channel of the North Crimean Canal, where water mixed with river silt and mud, losing drinking quality, while water losses due to neglected canal structures reached from 33% to 50%.
