Film "The Andromeda Nebula" (Filming in Crimea)

"The Andromeda Nebula" (1967) is a Soviet science fiction feature film directed by Yevgen Sherstobitov, produced at the Kyiv O. Dovzhenko Film Studio and based on Ivan Yefremov's novel of the same name. The film is renowned for its outstanding use of Crimean landscapes to recreate alien worlds and the futuristic architecture of the future.

Overview

The film "The Andromeda Nebula" became a significant event in the history of Ukrainian and Soviet cinema. In 1968, at the International Festival of Fantastic Films in Trieste (Italy), the film was awarded a special prize.

Unlike the 1957 novel, which portrays a technologically perfect but ideologically declared and somewhat soulless communist society, the film, thanks to the Ukrainian production and acting (Via Artmane, Mykola Kryukov, Serhiy Stolyarov, Tetiana Voloshyna), emphasized living human emotion and the opposition to rigid socio-technocratic dogmas.

Due to the premature death of actor Serhiy Stolyarov (the performer of the role of Dar Veter), the planned second part of the dilogy could not be filmed.

  • Crimean filming locations:
  • Alien landscapes: filmed on the Ai-Petri plateau, near Alushta, in Novyi Svit and the Kapsel Valley near Sudak. To give the mountain ranges and soil an otherworldly appearance, they were painted red during filming.

  • At the critical moment, when the wounded Niza falls into a coma and doctors offer Erg Noor the option to medically "erase" his feelings of love to avoid emotional suffering, the commander interrupts the therapy and quotes Shakespeare's 29th sonnet: "I live by your radiant love, and kings hold no sway over me". This episode becomes the film's semantic center, affirming the primacy of love over artificial rationalism.
  • Cast and highlighted storylines: the film focuses on the star expedition of the "Tantra" and the relationship between Erg Noor (M. Kryukov) and Niza Krit (T. Voloshyna), while the scientific teleportation storyline of Ren Boz was omitted.
