Christian Steven

Christian Steven — an outstanding scientist, botanist, and entomologist, founder and first director of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden in Crimea. He was the first to propose the idea of diverting Dnieper water to the Crimean Peninsula to address the problem of water resource scarcity.

Overview

In the mid-19th century, Christian Steven first proposed to the imperial authorities a project to build a canal to supply Dnieper water to arid Crimea. Although the initiative did not receive proper support at the time, it laid the foundation for future engineering developments in the irrigation of the steppe part of the peninsula, which ultimately materialized in the construction of the North Crimean Canal.
