Petro Ivanenko (Petryk)

Chancery clerk (kantseliaryst) of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, later Hetman of Khan's Ukraine, who concluded an anti-Muscovite alliance with the Crimean Khanate.

Overview

Petro Ivanenko, also known as Petryk, was an influential political figure of the Hetmanate period. He initially served as a chancery clerk under Hetman Ivan Mazepa. Later, having become hetman of the so-called Khan's Ukraine, in 1692 he concluded a strategic treaty with the Crimean khan on "eternal peace, brotherhood, and alliance." This alliance was directed against the Tsardom of Muscovy and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. His activities were centered in such settlements as Yahorlyk and Dubossary. The 1692 treaty is considered an important milestone in Ukrainian political thought and a precursor to the Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk.
